Sub-Genre Conventions- Micro

Micro is how the film looks, so the camera, editing, mise-en-scene and sound should be noted.




10 Things I Hate About You
(High School Drama)
Juno
(Youth Drama)
Camera
-Establishing shot of location (setting)
-Panning to the right to cars and panning up to show school.
-Medium shot to show facial expressions
-Close up shot of guidance counsellors name and computer.
-Panning to the left/ long shot of Juno walking.
-Close up of Juno's shoes (converse)
-Low angle shot of birds flying
-Birds eye view of Juno walking and lucking up into the sky
- Mid shot of Juno's Face.
Editing
-Special effects: animation of the city buildings and animation of title credits.
-Match cut of people in cars
-cross cut of girls in cars to a cut showing the school, showing that there is a link, that they are students and are travelling to school by car.
-shot reverse shot of teen boy and counsellor, showing they are having a conversation together.
-Transitions to different shots, (from long to mid shot)
-Match cut of Juno walking/ holding a drink and then drinking it.
-Animated title sequence/ Credits to make the sequence look as if some objects are drawn and others are real life pictures.
Sound
-non-diegetic sound of different genres of music (e.g. hip-hop and rock
-Foley sound of a car stopping and tearing paper off the wall.
-diegetic sound of actors dialogue, allowing the audience to identify their nationality
-Non-diegetic sound of Barry Louis Polisar's song "All I Want Is You"
Mise-en-scene
-Costume showing that their fashion sense is outdated.
-Props: cars, hockey pucks/sticks, computer- gives the audience an insight of different social groups.
-Location: neighbourhood, different types of shops, park and woods
-Juno's costume: tomboy clothes (hoodie, jeans, trainers)
-Prop: SunnyD bottle
