Sub-Genre Conventions- Macro

Macro is the structural elements in a film. It is the stories that the film tells the audience and includes the producers, audiences, cast, plot lines, characters and the order in which the story line is told to the audience. Teen dramas share a common plot, story lines and character. The main plot that they share is coming of age.

We can identify the concept of coming of age through:

• The youthfulness of central characters
• Conflict within relationships
• Conflict with an older generation 
• Management of adolescence by families, schools, law, etc...
• Romance
• Sexuality and sexually active

What is the key plot idea introduced in the title sequence?	An animated title sequence of two teenage boys dancing is introduced to the audience, with the use of simple colours. The title sequence hints that the two friends are going to end up going their separate ways.	Moving images of video clips from riots and the aftermath are shown in the title sequence. It is seen that there is a conflict between teenagers and adults (police).
In what order is the storyline introduced?	The Story line is introduced in chronological order: ·         Sex ·         Youthful ·         Family and Education	The story line is also introduced in chronological order. however there are flashbacks from the news, which provides the audience background information of the film.
What characters are introduced?	The characters introduced in the opening scene is two friends, Seth and Evan. Also Evan's mother.	The characters introduced are working class teenagers named Said (an Arab) and Vinz (a Jew).
What social groups are represented? How are they represented?	A complex representation of young male students, who are seen as gross from the conversation going on between the two, as well as sex obsessed, but they are likeable.	A complex representation of teenage boys who are seen negatively due to the violence towards the police and illegal activity such as vandalism, but also seen positively as the reason they are acting in this manner is because of their friend who was brutally hurt by the police and was sent to the hospital. The police however are represented negatively as they are violent towards the protestors.
