Extension activity - "watching"

What is the purpose of a film opening?
1) What does Thomas sutdiffe mean when he says "films need to adduce their audience into long term commitment. While there are many types of seduction, the temptation to go for instant arousal is almost irresistible"?
What Thomas meant by this was that the film should grab the audiences attention from the beginning of the film, this would make them want to finish watching the film.

2) According to director Jean Jacques Beineix, what are the risks of instant arousal ?
The risk of 'instant arousal' is that it could cause the audience to lose interest in the film, so it's best to arouse the audience slowly so it doesn't disappoint and bore them. This was stated by Thomas himself.

3) Explain why 'a good beginning must make the audience feel that it doesn't know nearly enough yet, and at the same time make sure it doesn't know too little"
What is meant by this is that the audience, should not know too much information about what is happening in the film, because then they would predict what will happen. But also not to give too little that they wouldn't understand the film.

4) What does critic Stanley Kauffmann describe as the classic opening? Why does this work ?
Critic Stanley describes a classic opening as something that should help the viewer expect what will happen in the film. A good example of this could be a establishing shot, this shot helps the audience know when and where the film is set.

5) Why is Kyle Coopers title sequence to the film seven so effective?
Kyles title sequence for se7en was really effective on the audience because of all different shots of props and different title openings. This helped the audience not lose interest and kept hold of their attention. On top this he also had gothic and dark music which helped the audience know that something horrific was gonna happen.

6) What did Orson Welles want to achieve with his opening of the film 'A touch of Evil'? What did universal studios do to it? Why?
Orson wanted to grab and interest the audience right at the beginning with the title opening of the film. He done this by having no sound during the opening, however universal studios didn't agree with what work he had done bacause they didn't think it was an orginial title sequence, so they changed it back.

7) What is meant by " a favourite trick of film noir "?
This just means having the beginning of the film look like it's ending so that the audience would be more intrigued to know what is there to come.

8) How does the opening of the film ' The shining' create suspense?
Suspense is created but the movement of the camera on the car at the beginning in the title sequence. Making it seem like a "predator".
