Analysis the order of titles for a high school drama and titles for a youth drama film - summarise differences and similarities

The term genre means 'category' or 'type' and is useful when discussing film because because it helps to group or organise different films according to what they are about and what they look like.

The use of similar features in films of the same genre are called codes and conventions.

The codes and conventions of teen films

The codes and conventions of teen films were established in the 1950s with films like rebel without a cause and the wild one, which were known as juvenile delinquent films, and films such as to sit with love which was about teen experiences at school.

Coming of age

• adolescent character
• high schools, homes and/or streets
• peer groups & friends

• teachers and/ or parents
• popular music
• romantic interest

Films of the same genre, which use the same codes and conventions in a distinctly different way, are known as sub-genre and this is another way in which we can categorise teen film in more detail.
